Glucose Diabetes

Do people with diabetes always have glucose in their urine?
i realize that they always have a high amount of glucose in their blood because they aren't able to produce insulin and all that, but does this mean that it is ALWAYS present in their urine? my bio teacher claims that it is, and took off a lot of points because i diagnosed a patient with diabetes even though they didn't have glucose in their urine.. any sources or information to help me prove her wrong (if she is wrong) would be appreciated. thanks.
note: i am referring to diabetes type 1..
I agree with you.
For glucose to show up in the urine the level of glucose would have to exceed the kidney threshold which is the bodys way of reducing the glucose level. Your teacher is teaching you that for almost all diabetics there will be glucose in their urine but that isn't an absolute event. There are contributing factors that she isn't taking into account ie. when is the last time the patient had eaten, how hydrated they are - if they hadn't eaten for 6 or more hours and generally are a well controlled diabetic and are well hydrated there probably wouldn't be any glucose in the urine. Also she didn't take into account that all people are different as is their renal threshold. Non diabetics can have glucose in their urine because they have a low renal threshold and it is a benign condition. There are no absolutes when it comes to the human body.
"The presence of detectable amounts of glucose in urine is known as glycosuria. Glycosuria occurs whenever the blood glucose level exceeds the reabsorption capacity of the renal tubules (renal threshold), that is, when the glomerular filtrate contains more glucose than the tubules are able to reabsorb."
